Cilla Vee – movement, performance – Asheville NC

Cilla Vee  (Claire Elizabeth Barratt) is an inter-disciplinary performing artist and director of Cilla Vee Life Arts.

Her work utilizes artistic disciplines of dance/movement, music/sound, text, media, visual and installation art – usually within the context of in-the-moment composition.

Originally from the UK, Claire received her professional training in London at The Laban Centre For Movement and Dance and at the London Studio Centre For Performing Arts. She also served an apprenticeship with the Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation in New York and has just completed an MFA in Creative Practice with the Transart Institute based in Berlin.

During the 1990s She was a founding member and co-director of Circle Modern Dance for ten years in Knoxville TN (now celebrating its 25th anniversary!) as well as resident choreographer for the Knoxville Opera Company and a dancer for Asheville Contemporary dance Theatre.

In New York during the 2000s, with the support of arts advocates such as Chashama, Bronx Council on the Arts and Arts for Art, she began to develop and present her signature modes of work – including “Motion Sculpture Movement Installations” and “The Sound Of Movement” projects.

Claire has presented her work in venues as diverse as Jacob’s Pillow, the New York Botanical Gardens, Black Mountain College Museum + Art Center and Art Basel Miami. She has performed and taught throughout the USA, Canada, Europe and Japan and is always inspired by her interactions with the global improvisation community.

She is now based in Asheville, North Carolina.
